Receiving Tomb - 2007

A receiving tomb is a vault or chamber where the dead are held until a final burial place is prepared. Receiving tombs were an indispensable part of a19th century graveyard; with winter grounds frozen solid, it was impossible to dig a proper grave. I worked with natural materials bought into the Forest Hills Cemetery receiving tomb and integrated them with rope that is knotted, hangs from the skylights and unravels into the space. Creating sculptural meditations on life and death, I strived to capture presence and absence of the tomb, integrating the processes of time and decay, along with mortality, loss, and impermanence, while reaching for some sort of mystical, mythological imagery.
